In addition to graduating as a National Merit Finalist and class valedictorian, Jeneé Christensen held various leadership positions during her high school career. Over her four year involvement with her city’s youth council, she served in the capacities of secretary, vice president, and president. In school she was president of the local chapter of National Honor Society and section leader in color guard and winter guard. While on the Speech and Debate Team, Jeneé earned numerous awards in five different competitive events and also won first place in three community organizations’ speech contests. She also obtained black belts in karate and kobudo (ancient Okinawan weapons).
After graduation she chose to continue her education studying civil engineering at Purdue University. As a Boilermaker, she stays busy as a member of the President’s Leadership Class, Women in Engineering Mentoring Program, Engineering Honors Learning Community, University Honors Program, and Purdue Navigators. Additionally, she thoroughly enjoys her experience as a cadet in Air Force ROTC, where she serves as Personnel Officer Assistant, a member of the Commander’s Action Group, and Drill Team member.
Jeneé hopes to take full advantage of her Stamps Scholarship to fund various study abroad trips. Growing up in a military family exposed her to the excitement of travelling and learning from other cultures, so she hopes to enhance her Boilermaker experience by studying and participating in unique, foreign experiences. She is particularly interested in studying in Italy and Australia, although she is open to anything! Jeneé also looks forward to taking advantage of other leadership and service opportunities while at Purdue.
Haefa Mansour, an engineering student from Mentor, Ohio, found her home as a freshman at Purdue University after being accepted to both Berkeley and MIT. Haefa graduated as valedictorian of Mentor High School in a class of over 700 students. She is a National Merit Finalist and proud recipient of the National AP Scholar Award for receiving a score of 5 on over 10 AP tests.
Busy inside the classroom and out, Haefa is committed to helping her community and has, among other activities, volunteered in excess of 350 hours at a nursing home in her hometown. Through hard work and devotion to philanthropy, Haefa has been able to build a great sense of compassion and a unique ability to connect easily with others on a personal level. "You cannot control your circumstances, you can only control how you react to them," Haefa says. She maintains an optimistic outlook in everything she does and refuses to let negativity weigh her down.
Taking the leadership initiative as a freshman, Haefa was named Assistant Director of the Purdue Student Government. She was selected to participate in a weekly leadership session instructed by France Cordova, President of Purdue University, and other important Purdue faculty. Haefa was also named Chairperson of the Engineering Honors Learning Community and is responsible for managing the events hosted by this group of honors engineering students. Her interests include mathematics, biological sciences and physiological sensing. Pursuing these interests, Haefa holds a research position in the Birck-Bindley Physiological Sensing Facility at Purdue University and is currently working on characterizing nanobiosensors.
Haefa is grateful for the opportunities that the Stamps Scholarship has afforded her. "The Stamps Scholarship provides me great support and allows me to focus on academics and volunteer work in student organizations around campus. I am greatly honored and thrilled to have been selected for this scholarship."
Anne Rodino, from Oswego, Illinois, is a freshman in the Pre-Pharmacy program at Purdue University. She is involved in the Pre-Pharmacy Club, the University Honors Program and its learning community, as well as her residence hall club. She is currently in leadership positions through her residence hall and the Honors Learning Community thus far, but plans to pursue other options in the future. Through her involvement in the Pre-Pharmacy Club, she has had the opportunity to work with the local Boys and Girls Club volunteering with an amazing group of children.
Her most prominent goal right now is to be accepted into the Purdue Pharmacy School, which is an extremely competitive program. She would love to have the opportunity to spend the next six years of her life at Purdue. The Pre-Pharmacy program is rigorous and fast-paced, but she loves the challenge.
Receiving the Stamps Scholarship was a huge honor for Anne, and she is very thankful to be able to attend Purdue as an out-of-state resident without worrying about the financial burden due to out-of-state tuition. She is also very excited about the opportunity to study abroad, thanks to the generosity of the Stamps Foundation. If not for their support she may not have the opportunity to have such an incredible experience. As of now, she plans to travel the summer after her sophomore year!
