Andrea Berkemeier, originally from Jackson, Michigan, is a Stamps Scholar at the University of Michigan where she is majoring in biomedical engineering and will graduate in 2014. In high school Andrea reestablished a defunct recycling program and helped her school earn certification as a Michigan Green School. She was also her class valedictorian, the only student to speak at graduation. Of her five siblings and large extended family, Andrea is proud to be the first to attend the University of Michigan. Although her love of math and science influenced her choice of majors, Andrea is an accomplished violinist who plays classical music, teaches violin, performs with small ensembles, and plays with UM's campus orchestra. She also writes short stories, performs in musicals, bakes, and makes her own jewelry. Beyond her major, her music, and her hobbies, Andrea (far right in this photo) works with sustainable living groups on campus.
"Through the vision and generosity of Penny and Roe Stamps, I was able to spend my spring break in Phoenix, Arizona. There, I worked with expectant mothers who would otherwise be on the streets, supporting them in becoming contributing, responsible members of society."
